2021 jeep gladiator ecodiesel first drive review: do the twist

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

Inside, the Gladiator has an upright dashboard that imitates the Wrangler’s and supports user-friendly controls. Durable details include a waterproof push-button start, and there are optional convenience features such as a heated steering wheel and heated front seats. Jeep says the truck’s stretched wheelbase improves back-seat legroom versus the four-door Wrangler. The Gladiator also has body and roof panels that can be easily removed to create an open-air cabin. Along with its five-foot cargo bed, the Gladiator is filled with ingenious interior storage options. Its cabin has a handful of spots to stick a smartphone and a handy compartment hidden under the back seat. The seats themselves can be stowed in multiple ways and then securely locked in place for when the trail turns treacherous.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

The Gladiator is powered by a 3.6-liter V-6 that produces 285 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque routed through a standard six-speed manual transmission or an optional eight-speed automatic. We tested an Overland model with the automatic, which needed 7.2 seconds to scoot to 60 mph. In other words, it’s slightly slower than most competitors. The Jeep adds a diesel 3.0-liter V-6, which develops 260 ponies and a mighty 442 lb-ft of twist. Compared with the regular Wrangler, the Gladiator has an extra 19.4 inches between the front and rear wheels. Jeep says this helps improve the pickup’s ride and handling. Now that we’ve driven several examples, we can confirm that it drives much like the Wrangler. The truck’s steering isn’t extremely precise and the ride can be busy on uneven surfaces. Still, these characteristics are part of the formula that make the Gladiator both a legitimate pickup truck and a trail-ready tool. Most enthusiasts care about the truck’s off-road equipment anyways, which includes everything from copious skid plates to rock-crawling axle ratios to the ability to ford up to 30 inches of water. Generous ground clearance and approach/departure angles further help the Gladiator conquer parts unknown.

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

The EPA lists two separate city and highway estimates for the Gladiator. Models equipped with the standard manual transmission are rated at 16 mpg city and 23 highway. The automatic gearbox increases its estimated city mpg to 16 and drops its highway figure to 22 mpg. We’ve only tested Gladiators with the automatic transmission on our 75-mph highway route that helps us better evaluate real-world fuel economy. The Overland model was the most efficient version, returning 21 mpg on the highway, but the Mojave returned a much lower 15 mpg. However, the latter was equipped with bigger tires and a higher rear axle ratio than the Overland (4.10 versus 3.73).

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

The 2020 Gladiator hasn’t been fully crash tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), and it hasn’t been evaluated at all by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). Although it’s available with a handful of driver-assistance technology, its roster is significantly smaller than some competitors. The Rubicon model has a useful front-facing camera that comes in handy when blazing trails or crawling over rocks. Key safety features include:

  • Available adaptive cruise control with forward-collision warning
  • Available blind-spot monitoring
  • Available rear parking sensors

What about the engine offered in the 2021 Jeep Gladiator Ecodiesel?

The Jeep Gladiator in its diesel guise uses a 3.0L turbocharged V6 engine putting out 260 hp and a whopping 442 lb-ft of torque. This torque is offered in the lower RPMs for better grunt. Power as you can see is down from the 285hp of the gasoline Gladiator but torque has almost doubled. The engine is mated to a new ZF sourced TorqueFlite 9HP75 8-speed automatic transmission to cope with the additional torque.

This gearbox routes all the power to all 4 wheels of this pickup. Yes, the Gladiator EcoDiesel gets an all-time 4×4 capability as standard. There are more than 40 individual shift maps to optimize shift points for fuel economy, performance, and 4×4 capability.

Since the Honda Ridgeline and the Toyota Tacoma are gasoline units they have a significant disadvantage when it comes to the torque produced. It can be seen that the smaller displacement Chevy Colorado produces a lot more torque than both the Japanese trucks.

The Gladiator diesel will be having a towing capacity of 7650 pounds, which is a significant step up when compared to the towing capacity of the standard Gladiator. Chevrolet Colorado is the only rival here that surpasses the towing capacity figures of the Gladiator EcoDiesel.

Pricing and Which One to Buy

We think the Sport S is the perfect canvas to create our ideal Gladiator. It comes standard with the 285-hp V-6 and a manual transmission. Ours would wear flashy Hydro Blue paint with the optional color-matched fenders. We’d also choose the all-terrain tires and anti-spin rear differential for improved traction when the blacktop ends, and we’d add the side steps to make getting in out and easier. We’d also select the three-piece hard top for its ability to quickly open up the roof. Inside, we’d add the headliner for better noise and temperature insulation and upgrade to the larger 8.4-inch touchscreen, because it adds navigation and is more sophisticated than the standard 5.0-inch unit. Our other preferred options include the Cargo Management pack (400-watt power inverter, an under-seat storage bin, and a bed-mounted 115-volt outlet) and the auxiliary switches and upgraded charging system for any lightbars or accessories that we’ll surely add for maximum Jeepness.

What is the engine offered in the 2021 Jeep Gladiator Overland?

The 2021 Jeep Gladiator Overland is powered by a 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 engine that pumps out 285 horses of power and 260 pound-feet of torque. This engine is coupled with a six-speed manual transmission but an eight-speed automatic transmission is available at an additional cost of $2,000. According to Jeep, this engine was designed with low-end torque, which enhances its off-roading capabilities. But under hard acceleration, the Gladiator feels sluggish.

A new Ecodiesel engine has been added to the engine line-up as an option that delivers 260 horses of power and 442 pound-feet of torque and costs an extra $4,000 over the base price of the Overland. This engine requires 8-speed automatic transmission to transmit the power to the wheels. This of course has a huge influence on the driving behavior and ride quality of the Gladiator. The throttle response is more open and the power resurrection is felt by revving the engine. The gas-powered engine has a towing capacity of 7650 pounds while the diesel engine’s towing capacity is limited to 6500 pounds.

What about the safety offered in the 2021 Jeep Gladiator Overland?

Surprisingly, Jeep was not more considerate of the basic safety requirements for a pickup truck. The number of airbags is limited to four including two dual front and two dual side airbags. As standard, only a reverse-facing camera and hill start assist come available with the truck. An optional Jeep Active Safety Group adds a blind-spot monitoring system, rear cross-traffic alert and rear parking assist that costs an extra $995. Some of the major safety features include-

  • Automatic Emergency Braking
  • Adaptive Cruise Control
  • Forward Collision Warning
  • Automatic High-Beam headlights
  • Parkview Back-Up Camera
  • Blind Spot Monitoring System

Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

The Gladiator has a warranty that’s similar to the rest of the Jeep lineup, which includes competitive limited and powertrain coverages. The pickup also includes three years of free maintenance.

  • Limited warranty covers three years or 36,000 miles
  • Powertrain warranty covers five years or 60,000 miles
  • Three years of complimentary scheduled maintenance is included

How’s the exterior styling of the 2021 Jeep Gladiator Overland?

Upfront, the Jeep Gladiator looks like the Wrangler and there is no Jeep insignia because the seven-slot grille essentially speaks for itself. When it comes to the grille, the Overland trim specifically offers silver accents. The halogen headlight with auto beam feature and fog lamps are standard. However, an optional LED lighting package adds LED headlights, LED fog lamps, and LED taillights.

The main highlight of the Overland trim is the body-colored fender arches and side steps that are standard. The whole truck is supported by 18-inch aluminum wheels that have touches of dark-gray finish. A soft top is standard for the roof, however, there are three different hardtop options including a body-color hardtop that costs an extra $2,295.

How’s the Exterior styling of the 2021 Jeep Gladiator Ecodiesel?

The exterior resembles a lot to the Wrangler it is based on. Nothing new has been added apart from the rear box. From the front, the Gladiator and Wrangler are hard to tell apart. The signature Jeep grille dominates the front fascia with the round LED headlamps. Pair that with the massive rubber flanking all the corners. Together, it makes for an unmistakable curb appeal.

The Jeep Gladiator offers an array of removable body panels such as the top and doors and a windshield that folds flat against the front bumper. All these elements lend the Gladiator an ultra-stylish look and make it highly versatile. There is only one bed on offer which happens to be a 5-foot steel bed that comes with a spray-in bed liner and a roll-up cover.

  • 3.6-литровый мощностью 289 л. с. (353 Нм) – бензиновый V-образный мотор серии Pentastar;

Overview

Jeep hasn’t offered a model with a cargo bed since the early ’90s, but the 2021 Gladiator finally gives the brand’s fans a cool and useful tool. The mid-size pickup truck is basically a more versatile version of the popular Jeep Wrangler, which earned it an Editors’ Choice award. It tows more (up to 7760 pounds versus 3500) than its SUV counterpart, and its longer wheelbase helps it ride better, too. Still, the truck requires regular steering inputs when cruising on the highway to keep it from straying, and it’s not as easy to maneuver on the trails as the smaller Wrangler. Along with a strong V-6 and a standard stick-shift transmission, the Gladiator offers a torquey diesel engine option with 442 lb-ft. While the 2021 Gladiator can get pricey in a hurry, its removable body panels and rugged persona make it one of the best pickups around.

What about the interiors and cargo space of the 2021 Jeep Gladiator Ecodiesel?

The 2021 Jeep Gladiator Ecodiesel has the same interiors as the regular model. The Jeep Gladiator’s additional 19-inch wheelbase over the Jeep Wrangler makes its rear seats even more comfortable with added legroom. The Front seat passengers get great outward visibility and a commanding driving position, all thanks to the short, upright dashboard, and the seat’s good lumbar support.

The insides of the Jeep Gladiator EcoDiesel boasts a similarly sensible layout as the Gasoline Gladiator. The Jeep Gladiator’s cabin is characterized by user-friendly controls and rear seats that can fold flat for supplementary cargo storage. The Jeep Gladiator is a cut above all of its competitors when it comes to the interior vibe.

In terms of its rivals, all of them are in fact 5 seater crew cab versions and therefore offer stellar practicality. In terms of quality, the Chevrolet Colorado’s cabin has better plastics inside and feels a bit more upscale. The worst in our regard is the Toyota Tacoma which has relatively lower quality plastics inside. Some of the interior features offered in the Jeep Gladiator are:

  • Heated Front Seats
  • Heated Steering Wheel
  • Dual-Zone Automatic Temperature Control
  • Lockable Storage
  • Passive Entry
  • 7-inch touch screen (an optional 8.4-inch touchscreen is available) with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto

Overview

The 2020 Jeep Gladiator picks up where the brand’s last cargo-bed-carrying model—the Comanche—left off in the early ’90s. Based on the legendary Wrangler, the pickup truck pairs a four-door cab with a five-foot box and an obligatory batch of serious off-road equipment. The latter includes large off-road tires, a sturdy suspension, and standard four-wheel drive. While a diesel-powered V-6 will arrive eventually, only a gasoline version is currently available on this Jeep. Still, the Gladiator represents a unique entry among mid-size pickup trucks and earned a spot on our 2020 10Best list. Its unmistakably rugged exterior and removable body panels make it an extremely stylish and versatile mode of transportation.

What about the mpg figures of the 2021 Jeep Gladiator Ecodiesel?

The 2021 Jeep Gladiator Ecodiesel is yet to be tested by the EPA. However, given that the Wrangler in its mild-hybrid V6 guise can return a combined 25 mpg, the Gladiator is expected to return around 24 mpg. Given that diesel is much cheaper than gasoline, the difference in running costs could be significant over time.

Though the estimated mpg figures are not yet available, still it is expected that the 2021 Gladiator EcoDiesel will be one of the most fuel-efficient pickups in the segment, as folks at Jeep have done a fair share of research on this powertrain. The 3L Turbodiesel V6 of the Gladiator EcoDiesel gets redesigned cylinder head intake ports and dual-loop exhaust gas recirculation system.

Apart from this, the compression ratio has also been optimized to 16.0:1. All these measures are specially aimed towards improving the fuel-efficiency and performance of the Gladiator EcoDiesel.

Even for gasoline engines the Ridgeline and the Tacoma are decent in their fuel consumption. The Toyota Tacoma returns 21 mpg and the Honda Ridgeline manages 22 mpg. The Chevy Colorado offers a modest 23 mpg combined, which is still lesser than what the Gladiator EcoDiesel is expected to offer.

What Owners Say… — Find the best Jeep deals!

Before we discuss the results of our evaluation of the 2021 Gladiator, it is helpful to understand who buys this midsize pickup truck, and what they like most and least about their vehicles.

According to J.D. Power data, 84% of Jeep Gladiator owners are male (vs. 85% for the segment), and the median age of a Gladiator owner is 53 years (vs. 56).

What kind of MPG figures will the 2021 Jeep Gladiator Overland offer?

The Gladiator’s 3.5-liter V6 engine isn’t as efficient as Wrangler’s mild-hybrid V6 engine. Hence, the fuel economy figures are not that great. The 2021 Jeep Gladiator Overland returns 16 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the highway with the manual transmission as recorded by EPA. When equipped with automatic transmission, it gives 17 in the city and 22 on the highway. It offers a range of 429 with its 22-gallon fuel tank. Fuel estimates will be better when powered with a diesel engine but the figures are not available at the time of this writing.

What about the safety offered by the 2021 Jeep Gladiator Ecodiesel?

Introduction — Find the best Jeep deals!

Last year, the 2020 Jeep Gladiator debuted, a classic nameplate applied to a new Wrangler-based pickup truck. More than just a cargo bed glued to a Wrangler cab, the new Gladiator is fortified for serious hauling and towing, making it a head-to-head competitor in the midsize pickup segment.

Now, the 2021 Jeep Gladiator sees a handful of changes, including availability of a turbo-diesel V-6 engine, which is known as the EcoDiesel. Additionally, new Willys Sport, Willys, 80th Anniversary Edition, and High Altitude versions of the Gladiator are available. Sport trim is offered with LED headlights and fog lights as an option, while Overland trim gains a new TrailCam forward-facing camera as an upgrade. Jeep has also started charging extra for every color of paint except for white.

For this review, J.D. Power evaluated a Gladiator Overland equipped with the EcoDiesel engine, an automatic transmission, a Selec-Trac full-time 4-wheel-drive system, and a Trailer Tow Package. It was dipped in Granite Crystal paint and had a body-color 3-piece hardtop with interior headliners, a spray-in bedliner, a hard tonneau cover for the bed, and a Premium LED Lighting Group.
